Bugreport[ܫܚܠܦ]

Shlomo ahuno, here is the link where I've added the bugreport: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26725. Michaelovic 12:36, 14 ܟܢܘܢ ܐܚܪܝ 2011 (UTC)

ܦܐܦܐ[ܫܚܠܦ]

Shlomo ahuno :-),

When we write about Catholic popes, should we use ܦܐܦܐ or ܡܪܝ? Since the common name to refer the pope is ܦܐܦܐ, I want to use this word. The only this is that there is already an article with ܡܪܝ ܝܘܚܢܢ ܦܘܠܘܣ ܬܪܝܢܐ. Should it be a redirect? Perhaps it should be noticed that ܦܐܦܐ ܫܢܘܕܐ ܬܠܝܬܝܐ is also written with ܦܐܦܐ.

My second question is how the write Roman Catholic Church properly. My way would be ܥܕܬܐ ܪܗܘܡܝܬܐ ܩܬܘܠܝܩܝܬܐ, but I've also seen ܥܕܬܐ ܩܬܘܠܝܩܝ ܕܪ̈ܗܘܡܝܐ. What do you think? Greetings, Michaelovic 15:01, 26 ܟܢܘܢ ܐܚܪܝ 2011 (UTC)

ܫܠܡܐ ܐܚܝ,

I agree: ܦܐܦܐ should be the title used. According to one dictionary I have, it says ܦܐܦܐ is the title of bishops of Rome and Alexandria (i.e., the Roman Catholic Church and the Coptic Orthodox Church). I think we can still use the ܡܪܝ/ܡܪܬܝ title for all saints, though. I'll redirect the Pope John Paul II article.

For the name of the Roman Catholic Church, I would've guessed ܥܕܬܐ ܩܬܘܠܝܩܝܬܐ ܪܗܘܡܝܬܐ (like the English and Latin name, Ecclesia Catholica Romana), but then again for "Assyrian Church of the East" I would've guessed ܥܕܬܐ ܐܬܘܪܝܬܐ ܕܡܕܢܚܐ rather than what it actually is: ܥܕܬܐ ܕܡܕܢܚܐ ܕܐܬܘܪ̈ܝܐ. I haven't found any older sources for the name, so in the mean time I think it's best to use the name that's actually in use (ܥܕܬܐ ܩܬܘܠܝܩܝ ܕܪ̈ܗܘܡܝܐ) rather than what we think is most logical and then have any other variants that we can think of as redirects. --334a 18:38, 26 ܟܢܘܢ ܐܚܪܝ 2011 (UTC)

ܫܠܡܐ,

The reason I came up with ܥܕܬܐ ܪܗܘܡܝܬܐ ܩܬܘܠܝܩܝܬܐ is because ܥܕܬܐ ܟܠܕܝܬܐ ܩܬܘܠܝܩܝܬܐ and ܥܕܬܐ ܣܘܪܝܝܬܐ ܩܬܘܠܝܩܝܬܐ are spelled the same way. But then again, it was only a thought. You also make a good point to refer to the spelling ܥܕܬܐ ܕܡܕܢܚܐ ܕܐܬܘܪ̈ܝܐ. Technicly speaking, ܥܕܬܐ ܩܬܘܠܝܩܝ ܕܪ̈ܗܘܡܝܐ isn't in use now, it's just mentioned since it's still a red link. Perhaps you are right to wait with that spelling until we find some other sources. Michaelovic 11:11, 27 ܟܢܘܢ ܐܚܪܝ 2011 (UTC)

ܚܫܘܒܐ ܐܘ ܚܫܘܒܬܐ[ܫܚܠܦ]

ܫܠܡܐ ܬܠܬܐ ܬܠܬܐ ܐܪܒܥܐ ܐܠܦ :)

I may be mistaken, but should ܚܫܘܒܐ (ܡܐܟܢܐ) be written as ܚܫܘܒܬܐ (ܡܐܟܢܐ)? Michaelovic 22:06, 2 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

I've never seen the feminine version, I've always seen the masculine. It's also masculine in Arabic and Hebrew. Have you ever seen it spelled ܚܫܘܒܬܐ before? --334a 00:02, 3 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

Actually, to be honest I always see the feminine version when refered to "computer". I can show you some examples of church books written in computer fonts:

So basicly, the only version I see is the feminine one in the context of a computer. Where have you seen it spelled on the masculine way and in which context? Michaelovic 14:17, 3 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

Hmm...two of my dictionaries (Bahra and Modern Aramaic (Assyrian/Syriac) Dictionary & Phrasebook) have the masculine form. In either case, I've created a redirect and mentioned the alternate form in the article. I'm guessing this isn't going to be the last time that modern words are going to give us trouble. :) --334a 04:10, 4 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

In that case, your solution is now the best one. I looked up the Modern Aramaic dictionary on Google Books. Very nice dictionary of Swadaya and Turoyo. Although I've seen some small errors in Turoyo, I believe it is a good dictionary. Michaelovic 18:12, 4 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

Yes, there are quite a few errors/peculiarities with the Eastern dialect as well, so I don't think we should trust it for Classical Syriac. It's not bad for modern words, though. :) --334a 05:26, 5 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

I guess we need one version for calculator and another for computer, what do you guys think?--Basharh 06:20, 5 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, definitely. Do you have any words in mind, Bashar? --334a 08:09, 5 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

Well we can use one of those two for computer and I personally prefer (ܚܫܘܒܬܐ) and (ܚܫܘܒܐ) for calculator. --Basharh 02:44, 6 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

I think we should make a disambiguation page for computer and calculator since they both "calculate". My idea is to redirect ܚܫܘܒܐ and ܚܫܘܒܬܐ both to the disambiguation page. Maybe we could use ܡܐܟܢܐ ܕܚܘܫܒܢܐ for calculator? Bashar, which two words do you have exactly in mind for computer?--Michaelovic 12:51, 6 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

Both of those dictionaries I mentioned list the masculine form for "computer" and the feminine form for "calculator" for the Eastern dialect, so the feminine is kind of used like a diminutive (which makes sense if you think of ܝܡܐ and ܝܡܬܐ). Hebrew also has the diminutive form for "calculator" (but the masculine diminutive, like ܚܫܘܒܘܢܐ). Also, the Modern Aramaic dictionary has ܡܢܝܐ and ܡܚܫܒܢܐ for "calculator" in Turoyo. Just something to think about. :) --334a 01:33, 7 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

I was originally talking about ܚܫܘܒܐ and ܚܫܘܒܬܐ , but we could use ܡܢܝܬܐ for calculator and either ܚܫܘܒܐ or ܚܫܘܒܬܐ for computer as ܚܫܒ is more complicated form of calculating than ܡܢܐ. in translatewiki I used ܚܫܘܒܬܐ for computer (you will notice that in the login page), shall I keep it as it is? --Basharh 05:27, 9 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

Your explanation is clear and fine by me :) Michaelovic 12:24, 9 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

edit[ܫܚܠܦ]

I am thinking that ܫܚܠܦ for "edit" needs to be changed and I was thinking of using ܬܩܢ instead and keep ܫܚܠܦ for "change" what do you guys think? and is there anywhere other than somebody's talk page to discuss these general topics? ܬܘܕܝ --Basharh 06:52, 9 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

I always thought that ܬܩܢ meant "to fix" or "to restore". My Aziz Bulut dictionary confirms this. I think that "change" and "edit" are synonyms in Syriac, therefore I would keep it on ܫܚܠܦ. Perhaps 334a could give us his opinion. Michaelovic 12:30, 9 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

How about we use ܘܝܩܝܦܕܝܐ:ܬܪܥܐ ܕܟܢܫܐ (the second link on the side) for community discussions?

Anyway, all "edit" means is "to change a text", so I think it's fine as it is. I've also come up with "to be proper" for ܬܩܢ. --334a 21:07, 9 ܐܕܪ 2011 (UTC)

lay out[ܫܚܠܦ]

shlomo ahuno, I don't know if I am the only one, but I can't see the wikipedia lay out since I think a week and a half. I don't know what's wrong or that you also have this problem, but I can't edit here when I see only flat text. I cleaned my cache a couple of times, but no changes.. It took me maybe 15 minutes to write this short message :S. Michaelovic (ܡܡܠܠܐ) 22:03, 8 ܒܐܝܪ 2011 (UTC)

ܫܠܡܐ ܐܚܝ,

Do you mean when you click on the "edit" button to see the the bare code (i.e., when you type)? Not really. But, for a long time, sometimes (usually after left-to-right text, like English), a few words of a sentence will just appear white. Sometimes it will show up if I highlight the text or refresh the page. It's never happened to me for an entire page, though.

In the past few days though, Wikipedia has been really weird. When I preview my edit, I don't see the yellow (old) or green (new) backgrounds or any red; the edit summary box looks smaller; the character input thing at the bottom doesn't work; and some other crazy stuff. Sometimes it works better on some wikis than others. All of this though only happens when I'm using Internet Explorer, not any other browser (but I don't like using any other browser because the Syriac fonts are too small or look odd in them).

Does it happen whenever you type Syriac on your computer or only on Wikipedia? Does it only happen on this wiki or all wikis? Does it only happen when you use one web browser (like Internet Explorer or Firefox)? For faster typing, you can always use a program like Notepad (so you can see the text), then you can paste it to the edit box. You can also try finding a "reset" button for your web browser or just re-installing/downloading it, but your preferences will usually be reset and some other odd things might happen so be careful. I hope that helped. --334a (ܡܡܠܠܐ) 23:22, 8 ܒܐܝܪ 2011 (UTC)

Shlomo, I mean it's like the whole aramaic wikipedia has no CSS stylesheet. It looks like a weird MS Word document where everything is out of place. I've checked it with IE and Mozilla, but I get the same problem. All other wikipedias on the other hand look fine.

The colors of the changing page (yellow and green) are indeed also gone. I send a message to a wikipedia developer so he can find out what the problem is. Tomorrow I will go on a two weeks vacation, so I hope that when I come back everything is normal again.

Michaelovic (ܡܡܠܠܐ) 17:59, 9 ܒܐܝܪ 2011 (UTC)

As I'm typing this, everything seems to be back to normal on my end (strangely)...

Oh well. Have a good vacation! ;) --334a (ܡܡܠܠܐ) 18:11, 9 ܒܐܝܪ 2011 (UTC)

Hmm, I see that everything is back to normal now. I guess my computer needed a vacation also :-) Michaelovic (ܡܡܠܠܐ) 20:52, 24 ܒܐܝܪ 2011 (UTC)

The semitic letters pages[ܫܚܠܦ]

Shalom a7i. I noticed that each letter has one page for all four alphabets while each letter of the Arabic Alphabet has an extra page just for it. I do believe they should be in different pages, since the Arabic Alphabet is many ways different than the other three (even though in English only the 6 added letters have their own articles), but the current situation just looks weird. There's really no need for most of them, at least in the current state of the Syriac Wikipedia. There already was an article about the Hebrew language. I created one for Semitic languages (as good as someone who doesn't speak Aramaic can) TFighterPilot (ܡܡܠܠܐ) 10:34, 16 ܒܢܝܣܢ 2012 (UTC)

Translation/collaboration[ܫܚܠܦ]

G'day from Australia, how are you mate? I see that you are quite active on Syriac Wikipedia, and I thought you might (or not) be interested in a little collaboration.

I am trying to find an editor who can help to translate User:Russavia/Polandball into Syriac. To encourage collaboration with this, I am uploading approximately 50 unique Iranian/Iraqi/Syrian aviation photos to Commons to try and encourage other article development here on Syriac Wikipedia.

Any editor is free to edit the article in my userspace for translation, and it can be moved into mainspace when it is done.

If you are interested or willing to help with this small collaboration, I thank you and welcome all assistance. If you have any questions, etc feel free to leave me a message at my talk page or you can email me. Thanks for your time, and cheers. Russavia (ܡܡܠܠܐ) 19:59, 18 ܒܬܫܪܝܢ ܐܚܪܝ 2012 (UTC)

Would you be interested in adding Aramaic image descriptions to the two images (translating the English descriptions into Aramaic)?
WhisperToMe (ܡܡܠܠܐ) 00:38, 12 ܒܬܫܪܝܢ ܐܚܪܝ 2013 (UTC)

Hmm. We try to use Classical Syriac Aramaic on this wiki, and the Paris and Yerevan memorials are written in some nonstandard form of Assyrian Neo-Aramaic (using spellings and words that would just be plain wrong in Classical Syriac). I'm not really sure how to rectify this: I can either write in my own dialect of Assyrian Neo-Aramaic (making up my own spelling as I see fit, with the high chance of speakers of other dialects not understanding), or I can write in Classical Syriac Aramaic (with the even higher chance that even less speakers of the modern dialects would understand). :) --334a (ܡܡܠܠܐ) 18:37, 13 ܒܬܫܪܝܢ ܐܚܪܝ 2013 (UTC)

You can write in both if that's okay. Official Aramaic is "ARC" and Assyrian Neo-Aramaic is ""AII" - Then one will be {{arc|1=}} and the other will be {{aii|1=}} WhisperToMe (ܡܡܠܠܐ) 18:50, 13 ܒܬܫܪܝܢ ܐܚܪܝ 2013 (UTC)

It's too blurry, I can't make it out. The first word looks like "church" though, so "Sacred Heart Chaldean Catholic Church" wouldn't be too big of a stretch. --334a (ܡܡܠܠܐ) 19:11, 17 ܒܬܫܪܝܢ ܐܚܪܝ 2013 (UTC)

Much better, thank you. One possible transliteration is ʿēttāʾ d-lebbēh d-māran d-ḵaldāyēʾ (ܥܕܬܐ ܕܠܒܗ ܕܡܪܢ ܕܟܠܕܝ̈ܐ, literally "Church of the Heart of Our Lord of Chaldeans"). --334a (ܡܡܠܠܐ) 18:12, 21 ܒܬܫܪܝܢ ܐܚܪܝ 2013 (UTC)
